Straight, Norman Thomas, Flora Payne Whitney, Williams C. Whitney, and the American Civil War. He won the Pulitzer Prize for biography in 1973 for "Luce and his Empire" and the National Book Award for biography in 1977 for "Norman Thomas: The Last Idealist."
